Mahamaham Stampede was a major mishap that occurred during the Mahamaham festival on February 18, 1992 CE around the Mahamaham tank located in the town of Kumbakonam in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. An estimated 50 people were killed in the stampede that left another 74 injured. The festival was attended by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha, who had a holy dip in the tank.

Mahamaham is a Hindu festival celebrated every 12 years in the Mahamaham tank located in the South Indian town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, India. Hindus consider taking a holy dip at the Mahamaham tank on the day of Mahamaham as sacred. The last Mahamaham was celebrated on March 6, 2004, with people from various places taking the holy dip in the Mahamaham tank.

The Kanthuri Festival is held at the Shrine of Saint Quadirwali in Tamil Nadu. One of the saint’s descendent is chosen as the spiritual leader of the celebration. The Peer or spiritual leader of the celebrations is then honored by the devotees. The Peer is given offerings by the devotees. Elaborate rituals accompany the offerings.

On the tenth day of the festival the tomb of Saint Quadirwali is anointed with sandalwood and offerings are made to the saint. The sandalwood paste is then distributed among the devotees.
